Breast Cancer Symptoms

Breast cancer may not cause any signs or symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Symptoms appear when the breast tumor is large enough to feel the mass at the touch or when the cancer has spread to the surrounding tissues and organs. Other medical conditions can cause the same symptoms as breast cancer.

The most common symptom of ductal carcinoma is a firm or hard mass that is very different from the rest of the breast tissue. It may seem attached to the skin or to the surrounding breast tissue. The mass does not shrink or disappear and does not recur during the menstrual cycle. It can be sensitive but is usually not painful. (Pain is more often the symptom of a non-cancerous condition.)

It often happens that lobular carcinoma does not form a mass. It is more like the breast tissue thickens or hardens.

Other symptoms of canal or lobular breast cancer may be these:

Armpit mass (axillary hollow)
Change in breast size or shape
Mamelonnaires changes, like a nipple that suddenly begins to point inward (inverted nipple)
Discharge of the nipple without being compressed or stained with blood
Late signs and symptoms occur when the cancerous mass grows or spreads to other parts of the body, including other organs:

Bone pain
Weight loss
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Jaundice
Shortness
Cough
Headache
Double Vision
Muscle weakness
Inflammatory breast cancer and breast Paget disease cause different symptoms.
