Gentle healing, "cura Placida" in Latin – promoting the development of gentle and protective healing processes for children suffering from cancer is the main objective of the Cura Placida Foundation – The Child Cancer Research Foundation.

Nowadays, childhood cancer is in many cases, but unfortunately not in any case, a curable disease. The types of therapies currently used are usually a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy with high energy rays and surgery. For affected children, however, these therapies are often painful and may be accompanied by unwanted long-term side effects. The consequences of these therapies can be particularly difficult to bear for children who still have their whole lives ahead of them.

Thanks to the decryption of the human genetic code (genome) a few years ago, the understanding of the medicine of the mechanisms of cancer development has clearly deepened. New analytical procedures in this area (e.g. high-throughput extraction technologies) often allow us to analyze the molecular mechanisms of cancer of individual patients and selectively identify Structures of therapeutic targets at the level of DNA, RNA, proteins and cellular function. The therapeutic procedures derived from these technical advances will enable the implementation, in the future, of targeted and therefore softer healing procedures (Cura Placida in Latin) for children suffering from cancer.

The development of so specific healing procedures is expensive. Promotion through public funding does not allow for a quick turnaround. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical industry cannot advance research in this area satisfactorily, since cost-effectiveness is generally much less advantageous compared to common public health diseases.
