Symptoms of liver cancer

It is possible that liver cancer does not cause any signs or symptoms in the early stages of the disease. The liver is a large organ that can function normally even if it contains a large tumor. Signs and symptoms appear when the tumor grows and causes changes in the body, for example if it obstructs the bile ducts. Other medical conditions whose cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) can cause the same symptoms as liver cancer.

Consult your doctor if you experience these signs and symptoms:
Abdominal pain, which can radiate to the right shoulder
Hump or mass under the ribs
Nausea
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Sensation of fullness after a light meal (called early satiety)
Diarrhea
Constipation
Weight loss
Swelling of the abdomen caused by fluid accumulation (called malignant ascites)
Swelling of feet and legs caused by fluid accumulation (called edema)
Fatigue
Weakness
General feeling of discomfort or illness (called malaise)
Hepatic encephalopathy occurs when the liver is not functioning properly and waste accumulates in the blood. This may cause the following symptoms:

Breath having a sweet or moldy odor
Confusion
Memory loss
Drowsiness
Change in personality or mood
Nervousness and anxiety
Speech impairment (difficulty articulating)
changing sleep patterns
Tremors or difficulty in controlling the movement of hands and arms
Coma
Portal hypertension refers to an increase in blood pressure in the portal vein (the main vein that carries blood to the liver). This can occur when a liver tumor blocks blood circulation in this vein, or in the presence of cirrhosis (scarring of the liver). The increase in blood pressure leads to the formation of large veins (called varices) in the stomach and esophagus in order to allow the blood to bypass the blockage. Varicose veins are very fragile and can easily bleed. The symptoms of portal hypertension include:

Bulge on the left side of the abdomen (caused by swelling of the spleen)
Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (called ascites)
Shortness of breath (caused by fluid accumulation around the lungs, called pleural effusion)
Blood in the stool, giving them a black and tar appearance
Vomiting of blood
